Clash of the Titans:Old Vs. New
Man, did anyone catch the new Clash of the Titans. If so, what did you think. I found it OK, but it sure wasn't what I thought a new remake would be. Now, I didn't catch this on 3D, because I heard it was rush and not made for that format. But I think this movie was made for the "God of War" video game fans then people who remember the old movie or geek legends.
My problems with the remake was the special effects. I found the new effects dull and boring. I think the CG effects was to crisp and not dirty or rough and I fail to see why they went on that path.
Here's some things to compare to see why Ray Harryhausen workings and is still better then what CG effects can produce today.
Take the ferryman from the River of Styx. I found the bone man to be classic, while the new one felt something out of the video games of God of War. Nothing about it is creepy, just looks like a creature you would fight a the end of a boss level.
Here was one I thought the miss entirely. Calibos was a great character and part of geek lore. But the new one took a almost "Once and Future King" story line. Also, nothing about felt too involve with the character. It's was nothing more then a henchman for the remake.
The one thing I thought they couldn't mess up was Medusa, but they did. If you compare it to the the 80's one you find that this Medusa was far more scarier and more creepy then the new one. Look how bad and ugly she looks. Nothing about it say's that you should fight it, only run away from her. But in the new one, it almost straight from the God of War video game, a pretty yet bring you gamepad to fight her with feel.
Well, I don't know about you guy's but I just think CG can work, but not just to do effects because you can make it look better. If no creative ideas is use all you get is pretty pictures with no substance. Well, I grew up on the original back in the day and I just thought it could have try to reach the same ladder that the 80's one did. It just goes to show you did the great artist like Mr. Ray Harryhausen knew how to do it and we still trying to reach the same level of quality of design.
Yeah, Clash of the Titans might as well have been the "God of War" movie, but hey they doing that too. So, I hope Clash sequel( I don't think I given that away if you heard all about this movie and how it ends.) will improve from it's first try. Until then looking forward to see Clash more like this except this is coming too.
Here the one and only Ray Harryhasen with the good and real original.
